TK Holdings Inc. (“Takata”) has determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety may arise in the passenger airbag inflator installed in Model Year (“MY”) 2012 Fisker Karma vehicles due to propellant degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling. Activation of an airbag equipped with an inflator with degraded propellant may result in an inflator rupture. If an inflator rupture occurs, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion and into the vehicle interior at high speed, which could result in injury or death to a vehicle occupant.

Although Karma Automotive LLC does not have any legal duty to recall Fisker vehicles, in consultation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”), and as a continued sign of goodwill, Karma Automotive LLC and its Service Providers have agreed to provide a free replacement for front the passenger airbag inflators covered by the Takata determination that are installed in MY 2012 Fisker Karma vehicles.

Please note that at a present time, we do not have replacement parts available. As soon as parts are available, Karma will send owners a letter that will explain what to do to obtain the free remedy.

MY 2012 Fisker Karma Vehicle Front Passenger Airbag Inflator Questions

The airbag inflator that is the subject of the Takata recall is a Takata PSPI-1 airbag inflator located in the front passenger position. The driver side airbag inflator in the MY 2012 Fisker Karma vehicle is not affected by this recall.
No. In the case of the MY 2012 Fisker Karma vehicle, the Takata recall only applies to the Takata front passenger airbag inflator. Other Takata airbags or airbag inflators in the vehicle, including the driver side airbag inflator, are not affected by this recall.
Yes, all MY 2012 Fisker Karma vehicles are equipped with airbag inflators from Takata. However, the airbag inflator located at the front passenger position is the only airbag inflator affected by this recall.
Each airbag system consists of a number of components which collectively need to meet strict United States crash and safety design requirements and must be certified for the application of each vehicle design. Therefore, it is not a simple change of one component of the system. The replacement being provided to MY 2012 Fisker Karma owners will have an airbag inflator made by Autoliv. The use of the new supplier for the inflator has required other changes to the airbag system to meet U.S. requirements.
No. Federal Regulations prohibit airbag disablement.
Karma Automotive is not aware of any incidents affecting MY 2012 Fisker Karma vehicles. However, this is an urgent recall mandated by the NHTSA that requires the vehicle owner’s immediate attention as soon as parts are made available by Takata.
No. There is no symptom that would indicate if your vehicle has a front passenger airbag inflator that is potentially at risk of rupturing during deployment in a crash. However, until the repair is done for the airbag inflator located at the front passenger position, it is recommended that no one sit in the front passenger seat.
The Karma Automotive team is working very closely with NHTSA and Takata officials, and within the guidelines of the NHTSA Coordinated Remedy Program, to secure parts as soon as possible for the recall. At this time, Karma Automotive does not have any information to share regarding the timing of parts but will promptly notify affected owners once this information is available.
Regardless of availability of parts, Federal Regulations and NHTSA require automotive manufacturers to notify the government promptly within five business days and affected vehicle owners within 60 days of a determination of a safety defect or noncompliance. The timing of this announcement is dictated by the terms of Karma Automotive’s agreement with NHTSA and the NHTSA Coordinated Remedy Program, which prioritizes the replacement parts to Zone A states, where the potential risk for an airbag inflator rupture during deployment is considered to be the greatest.
Once an adequate inventory of Takata replacement parts becomes available, Karma Automotive will mail a second owner notification letter to all MY 2012 Fisker Karma vehicle owners located in Zone A states urging the owners to schedule an appointment for the repair (“Second Notification Letter”).
The volume of replacement parts required is extraordinarily large because the Takata recall affects multiple automotive manufacturers and millions of vehicles nationwide.
